UVM Graduate Student Katherine Horigan is accepted at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University - 7/15/2006

KC Horigan graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania in May of 2004 with a B.S. degree in Biology. Working with Dr. Russ Hovey, UVM Assistant Professor of Animal Science, KC's project focuses on investigating the effects of estrogen, progesterone and prolactin on mammary gland growth and development using pigs as a model. After removing endogenous hormone levels through ovariectomies and the use of prolactin-antagonists, each pig was treated with one of nine possible hormone combinations. Her research will focus on identifying the effects of these hormones on mammary growth, morphology and their respective hormone receptors. KC will finish her Master's project this July and attend Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University this coming fall where she's excited to get as much hands-on experience in a variety of species as possible. She hopes to practice domestic animal medicine with a specialized focus on wildlife and exotic species.
